The Project
The "A350 project highway" is a major scheme to upgrade the A350 bypass in Chippenham, Wiltshire, to a dual carriageway. The £32 million project, which began in Spring 2025 and is being led by MJ Church, aims to increase capacity, reduce delays, and improve traffic flow on this key route connecting the M4 to the south coast. The project is currently on track for completion in November 2026 and includes upgrades to the Bumpers Farm and Lackham Roundabouts. Wiltshire County Council funded the construction of a dual carriageway.
Project Requirements
The A350 Chippenham Dualling project seeks to optimise the functionality of the A350 as a critical transport artery through Wiltshire. By alleviating congestion and enhancing road capacity, the scheme aims to facilitate housing and employment growth while preserving the strategic importance of the A350 Chippenham Bypass within the regional road network.
Project Objective
Based on the issues identified above, and emerging local goals and policies, objectives for the scheme have been identified and the predicted performance of each option against the proposed objective has been assessed.
- Reduce the frequency of personal injury collisions along the A350 Chippenham Bypass and parallel routes
- Improving journey time reliability on the A350 to preserve its key role as part of the advisory freight route network
- Increase the capacity of the A350 Chippenham Bypass to support planned growth (Wiltshire Core Strategy and CSAP) and future growth (emerging Local Plan)
- Improve journey time reliability and reduce total delay along the A350 Chippenham Bypass which may otherwise discourage inward investment towards new and existing employment sites in Chippenham
- Protect the strategic role of the A350, by increasing the road capacity to improve north-south connectivity and minimise traffic reassigning onto the local road network.
